I love October. The golden tree leaves, the chilly nights, and the premise of Halloween! And isn’t it one of life’s simplest but greatest pleasures to curl up with a blanket and a good mystery book? Getting lost in intrigue and adventure? Especially when it is all set in far-flung places! Below you will find some of my latest favourite mystery books to get you in the mood for Halloween… while also satisfying a bit of your wanderlust!
THE GUEST LIST, BY L. FOLEY
Jules and Will are the perfect couple. They have the perfect life. They want to host the perfect society wedding. And then everything starts to fall apart.
Off the west coast of Ireland, on a creepy island forgotten long ago by humanity, a spectacular wedding is to take place. More than that, its guest list is, literally, to die for. A ghost story narrated in the most haunting of ways, you will not want to put this one down.
THE LAST HOUSE GUEST, BY M. MIRANDA
In Littleport, Maine, everything is ‘little’. Little houses, little businesses… and so are expectations. A holiday paradise for the wealthy. An underwhelming coastal community for the locals.
Rich socialite Sadie and middle-class orphan Avery have been best friends for over a decade, despite all odds. Until one day Sadie is found dead. Is her death really a suicide or is something more sinister taking place in this summer utopia? A girl’s fight to prove her sanity of mind, her strength of character and her undying loyalty to her best friend.
A bit of a slow burner in the beginning but a very satisfying ending. The Last House Guest is a riveting coastal thriller.
Wouldn’t you agree that these mystery books are perfect for Halloween? It goes without saying that they are best enjoyed with a hot cup of tea or glass of red wine, a cosy blanket and a storm raging outside.
